Rainbow Bridge National Monument To Be Closed In January For Trail Repairs

Share

Rainbow Bridge National Monument in southern Utah will be closed for the month of January to complete repairs to the trail from Lake Powell.

On January 5, crews will begin work to repair segments of the trail that were damaged in the monsoon floods that occurred in late September 2013. Because of the nature of this work, there will be no access for visitors coming from Lake Powell, a park release said.

Hikers who have obtained permits from the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department to hike from Navajo Mountain will be able to access the viewing area but not the remaining trail going to Lake Powell, it added.

The damage included the loss of approximately 150 feet of trail between the dock and the first shade structure, with a 21-foot drop-off into Bridge Creek.

Too bad they are rebuilding it. It should be removed instead and no access from the lake allowed. I hiked in from Navajo Mountain many years ago and the view from the large cave upstream was magical. We hiked on down to the bridge and the trash and crowds  removed any illusions we had that rainbow bridge was a special place.
