Cape Cod National Seashore Offering Special Programs For February School Vacation

If you live on or near Cape Cod and are wondering how to keep your children occupied during the upcoming February break, the folks at Cape Cod National Seashore have a week-long series of activities to help you out.

Nature walks, a tour of a whaling captain’s home, a presentation on the Gulf oil spill, landscape painting for children, and a showing of the original animated 101 Dalmatians are among the programs being offered by the seashore staff between February 19 and 26. All programs are free, and many occur at Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham. Some outdoor programs are weather-dependent. Call ahead to 508-255-3421, ext. 0 if weather is inclement.

Here's a look at the schedule:

Saturday, February 19:

Activity: Painting for Children, 1:00-4:00 p.m., Salt Pond Visitor Center

Sunday, February 20:

Activity: Painting for Children, 12:30-2:00 p.m., Salt Pond Visitor Center
Film: 101 Dalmatians, 1:30 p.m., Salt Pond Visitor Center

Monday, February 21:

Walk: Birth of a National Seashore, 2:00-3:00 p.m., 1-mile, meet at Hemenway Landing, off Rt. 6, Eastham

Wednesday, February 23:

Talk: Ready for an Oil Spill? 10:00-11:00 a.m., followed by optional beach walk, Salt Pond Visitor Center

Activity: Brrr!—Animals in Winter, 2:00-3:30 p.m., half-mile, if weather permits, Salt Pond Visitor Center

Thursday, February 24:

Walk: At the Edge of the Sea, 10:00-11:00 a.m., 1-mile walk, Coast Guard Beach, Eastham

Friday, February 25:

Slide Program: Tracking the Cape’s Critters, 2:00-3:00 p.m., Salt Pond Visitor Center

Saturday, February 26:

Tour: Captain Penniman House—A Whaling Family’s Story, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. By reservation only, 508-255-3421, ext. 0.

If you go: Salt Pond Visitor Center is located at the intersection of Route 6 and Nauset Road in Eastham and is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. The center includes a lobby with expansive views of Salt Pond, Nauset Marsh, and the Atlantic; a museum featuring the park’s natural and cultural stories; staff to assist with trip planning; and a store with books, maps, puzzles, games, t-shirts, and 50th anniversary commemorative items. There are short films shown throughout the day. The Buttonbush and Nauset Marsh Trails, and the Nauset Bike Trail are located nearby.
