Earlier this week I posted from Washington, D.C., about the Government Accountability Office's report on how financially stretched the national parks are. The Interior Department, in response, maintained that the report "creates a misleading impression of the state of park operations."
Well, newspapers around the country have been following up on that GAO report and their stories read as if park operations are indeed struggling to make ends meet. A story in the Evening Sun, a paper that covers Gettysburg National Military Park, points to quite a few problems that park is having because it doesn't have enough funding to meet its daily operations.
John Latschar, Gettysburg's superintendent, told the newspaper that during the past five years his staff has lost 13 permanent employees along with 23 seasonal workers. Among the employees lost was the park's only historic architect.
