Night Sky Festival Returning To Santa Monica Mountains NRA, Will Include New Junior Ranger Patch

With the new moon coming on July 22, the Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower nearing its peak, and the total solar eclipse the next month, the National Park Service is excited to present its annual summer Night Sky Festival in the Santa Monica Mountains on that date.

Mountain Lions At Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Lack Genetic Diversity

So poor is the genetic diversity of mountain lions in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and surrounding areas in California that a single new cat to the area could have a great impact, according to wildlife biologists.

Two Mountain Lions Added To Study In Santa Monica Mountains

Two young mountain lions, suspected to be brothers, were fitted with GPS collars last month and added to a 15-year-old study of the big cats in and around Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

At Least One Mountain Lion Kitten Born In Santa Monica Mountains

While roadkills have impacted the number of mountain lions in and around Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in California, those are offset at times by the arrival of kittens. This week the park staff has announced a new litter of at least one kitten, though there's concern the parents are related.

Rare Amphibian Species Discovered Breeding In Santa Monica Mountains

National Park Service researchers surveying a stream in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area last week spotted signs of California red-legged frog reproduction. The nine egg masses found are the first known evidence in recent times of the species sustaining a population in the Santa Monica Mountains without the help of humans.

What's On The Menu For Santa Monica Mountains Coyotes?

More than a decade ago, National Park Service researchers collected coyote scat from 14 sites in and around the Conejo Valley in California. They wanted to understand the diet of local coyotes. Researchers are now going back to those same sites to repeat the study and see what has--or has not--changed.

Another Mountain Lion Killed Near Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

A young female mountain lion was recently struck and killed by a vehicle on State Route 118 to the north of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in California, marking the third time a mountain lion was hit by a vehicle on the same stretch of freeway since December, according to the National Park Service.

Vehicle Collision Kills Female Mountain Lion, Outlook For Her Kittens Not Good

A fatal collision removed not only a mature female mountain lion from the population that roams the Santa Monica Mountains of California, but also is expected to lead to the deaths of her three kittens, the National Park Service announced Thursday.
