Getting to New River Gorge National Park And Preserve

Getting to New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is not too difficult. If you don’t intend on making an epic road trip, then you’ll more than likely be flying then renting a vehicle to get into the park. The nearest major airport is the West Virginia Yeager International Airport (CRW) located in Charleston, West Virginia, into which fly Delta, United, American, and Breeze. From there, it’s about 70 miles (113 kilometers) to reach the Canyon Rim Visitor Center in Lansing, West Virginia.

Public transportation is offered to various portions of the park (Hinton, Prince, Thurmond, Oak Hill, Beckley.

Amtrak service is available to three locations in the park, three days a week. The Cardinal, traveling between Chicago and New York, NY, makes scheduled stops at Hinton and Prince, with Thurmond as a flag stop for passengers with reservations.

Greyhound has a bus terminal in Beckley.

Taxi services are based in Oak Hill and Beckley.

There is no single road connecting all the overlooks and trails through the entire length of the park. There is an eight-mile (13 kilometer) paved one-way Fayette Station Road route from the Canyon Rim Visitor Center is a scenic drive leading you from the top down into the gorge and across a bridge spanning New River, but it goes no further. Your best bet is to stop at one of the visitor centers and pick up a park map to see all the roads leading to other portions of the gorge.

Do not rely on your phone or car navigation app because they may lead you to out-of-the-way areas of the park and not a visitor center. If you do choose to use a navigation app, please use the following GPS/addresses listed below.

Sandstone Visitor Center

Sandstone Visitor Center is located just north of the I-64 and State Route 20 interchange (Exit 139).

Canyon Rim Visitor Center

Canyon Rim Visitor Center is located on U.S. Route 19, just north of Fayetteville, WV. U.S. Route 19 is easily reached from Interstates I-64 and I-79, as well as U.S. Route 60.

Grandview Visitor Center

To reach Grandview from Beckley follow I-64 East five miles (8 kilometers) to Exit 129 B. From Lewisburg follow I-64 West 40 miles (64.4 kilometers) to Exit 129. From either exit, turn right and follow Route 9 North for six miles (9.7 kilometers) to Grandview.

Thurmond Depot

The Thurmond Depot Visitor Center is located seven miles (11.3 kilometers) down State Route 25. Take the Glen Jean exit off U.S. Route 19 north of Beckley and follow the signs to Thurmond.
