Remains Of Man Who Went Missing At Mesa Verde National Park Found

Jun 24th - 08:55am | Bill

The reason the tips were anonymous is because the part of the park they found him in we're off limits with no trespassing signs. He remained anonymous so he wouldn't get in trouble.

Try YouTube and search for Two HIKERS missing in national parks. I was able to find Vanished, which aired on the HIstory Channel searching that way.

May 19th - 20:39pm | Martha Elizabet...

I'm Dale's older sister. Every so often I google his name and just read articles, watch videos about his case. My family and I were devasted to lose Dale in such a weird way. On June 9, 2023, we mark ten years since he went missing. I'm still not over it. He was my best bud in the world. You raised some interesting questions.

Climate-Change Concerns Prompting New Review Of Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Program

Jun 20th - 12:49pm | T Hasbrouck

The reason Florida doesn't recognize Climate Change is because we have had a string of Govenors, starting with Rick Scott and now Ron DeSantis that don't believe in Climate Change.  Then Govenor Scott wouldn't even let anyone who worked for the state use the words Climate Change in any document or speech.  It's unfortunate that homeowners who can't afford to move elsewhere will be the most impa

Mules In Grand Canyon National Park: Should They Stay?

Jun 18th - 18:29pm | Eric Burgeson

I say "KEEP  the MULES" after all, they do a superb job of transporting humans AND  "cargo";  without pack mules,  how would  Phantom Ranch receive their supplies???  Probably too expensive to put in a helicopter,  and a train of mules can haul more;  so this one is a "no-brainer;  nothing wrong with hikers walking around manure piles,  goes with the territory;  so please KEEP  THEM;  not only

Funding Outlook For National Park Service Bleak At This Point

Jun 16th - 08:39am | ecbuck

Could you clarify that $125 million number.  Surely the "annual fixed costs" for the NPS is higher than $125 million.  Is that the projected increase in fixed costs?  And if they are "fixed" why are they going up.

Traveler's View | Expanding The National Park System

Jun 7th - 15:38pm | A . Johnson

Unless and until the NPS can properly manage what it has already been assigned to manage, NO MORE nat'l parks or monuments!  Sorry, but we need to eliminate the NPS, and start to dream it up again as a whole new agency.  When compared to the ecosystems and natural resources that state, localities, and private landowners  are managing, maybe the NPS should take notes from them.

Jun 6th - 13:20pm | Live in AZ

We live not too far from the Chiricahua National Monument in SE Arizona. It's a spectacular place with rhyolite hoodoos and gorgeous scenery. AZ senators are pushing to upgrade the status to a National Park, citing that it will be good for the nearby economy and good for tourism to AZ in general.

Debt Ceiling Agreement Stands To Be Damaging To National Park Service

Jun 6th - 12:30pm | Phil Selleck

More reason why the NPS should be an independent entity like the Smithsonian. The natural, cultural, and archeological features NPS protects, preserves and conserves are every bit as important as the artifacts Smithsonian curates, and as irreplaceable in many instances; reduction in funding only exposes those special places to deterioration, damage and destruction.

Wild Horses in a Georgia Wilderness? Cumberland Island National Seashore Completes Annual Count

Jun 5th - 13:14pm | D.R.

Your concerns are appreciated, but let's take a  step back and look at the big picture.   Horses were endemic to North America, though they apparantly disappeard from the fossil record before modern times.  However, "Absence of evidense is not evidence of absence."

Jun 5th - 11:41am | D.R.

Only recently, and mostly in the USA is a love of horses considered a 'girly' thing. Before the 1970's, toy horses were mostly sold for boys.   Interestig, isn't it?

Interior Officials Urged To Support NPS Rule On Hunting And Trapping In Alaskan Preserves

Jun 4th - 20:09pm | C Whitman

Indigenous Alaskans have a sovereign right to exist "on lands under the stewardship of the National Park Service" without constantly being diminished, threatened, and dictated to by the dominant settler culture and its attempt to control animals.  The sentiments expressed in the supportive comments described here should be reason enough to abandon this process.  It's time to stop judging Native

I just don't think it's right for the hunters to go off and shoot mother bears and cubs during denning season, and wolves and.swimmimg Caribou. If mankind is to kill those people. They will become a brink of extinction. I believe it is a inhumane and cruel practice. for hunters to shoot mother bears and cubs in dens. That goes along with the wolves and swimming Caribou. .

Jun 4th - 01:52am | Mike B.

Did subsistence hunters shoot bears over a pile of donuts?  I don't think so.  The Trump era changes were shameful.

Jun 3rd - 23:02pm | Edward Hailstone

Hunting swimming Caribou Llows a hunter to examine and choose their meats, brain shot, instant death, no pain, no wasted meat, no wounded, c lean atvthe rivers edge. No c alves separated from their cow, no Cows taken. Tradional and viable as a hunting method to get enough food in Gall for winter in the Arctic

Jun 3rd - 22:09pm | Native Alaskan ...

Is it really unethical for indigenous subsistence hunters to take swimming caribou when they have been doing so for thousands of years?  I think not as this method of feeding your family is ethical and humane especially when considering how most livestock is killed.  Lets be clear, subsistence hunters are not hunting for sport:  They hunt for food.  Will government land managers get in the way

Bison Slaughter In Yellowstone National Park Draws Protest Against Park Service

Jun 3rd - 00:56am | Ken Harrell

Until recently, I mistakingly believed that our tax funded National Park system protected wild life, but I am now greatly disappointed  to hear that Yellowstone National Park officials participate in the slaughter of OUR American bison. Our National Park system is there to preserve, not destroy, the land and creatures that live on it.

National Park Service Struggles With Feral Horses

May 31st - 23:24pm | Cary Carlson

The NPS tried to remove horses, according to Carol Ruckdeshel, in her book, but met with great political opposition.  Because of the tourism money.  The tourists would still come, just stop advertising "wild" horses as the big draw.  Many parks put the resource first.  Whole areas may be closed seasonally due to sensitive wildlife needs such as nesting.  Feral hogs are literally fenced out of P

Everything is always about politics and money.  You have a perfectly almost secluded beautiful island with interesting history and wildlife that is actually meant to be there and yet you can't find ethical ways to keep public interest other than off the backs or should I say souls of these horses?

Harry A. Butowsky, Long-Tenured National Park Historian, Gone At 78

May 30th - 20:59pm | CJDillon

I remember stopping by his desk a number of times when I worked in Washington and there was always a stack of books piled nearby, almost as tall as me, waiting to be converted to the eLibrary.

May 29th - 14:19pm | RD Payne

Harry's side gig was teaching World War II history at George Mason University (his favorite course), along with World War I history and Western Civilization (his least favorite; by the time he got to lecturing about Pliny the Elder he had pretty much weeded out from the class those who genuinely had zero interest in World history -- come on, who wouldn't be interested in learning about a guy wh

Harry played a key role in helping to establish Brown v. Board of Education NHS (now NHP) in 1992.  That path started with his authoring of The U.S. Constitution: A National Historic Landmark Theme Study (1986).  As Harry wrote in a special edition of CRM (Vol. 19 No. 2) in 1996:

National Park Service Continues To Score Low In Best Places To Work Survey

May 27th - 10:40am | Bobby Dupea

Same story every year. Things won't be getting better any time soon. From what I am seeing, it has never been easier to get a permanent job in the NPS, but be prepared to take a vow of poverty. The residents of gateway communities have figured out that it is more lucrative to rent to tourists than to rangers.

Debt Ceiling Battle Could Be Crippling For National Park Service, National Parks

May 24th - 06:31am | Jim R, PA MO

The GOP active in office, in my opinion, have a responsibility to do whatever they can to reduce the unnecessary costs and spending for all US. Democrats supporting raising the debt ceiling without serious spending cuts are out of touch on the impact the US debt $31trillion has on our country.  This excessive spending needs to get under control toward a balanced budget.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Bookstores Carrying New Children’s Title To Help Protect Wildlife

Nearly 40 Years After Paul Fugate Disappeared, Effort Renewed To Find Missing Ranger

I talked with Paul for over an hour a couple weeks before he disapeared. I had been harrassed by a member of a then notorious family in the area.

The Western Snowy Plover: A Tiny Shorebird On A Long Journey

May 19th - 11:25am | Ken Bouley

According to NPS, "Common ravens are the primary predators of nests and hatchling snowy plovers at Point Reyes National Seashore." The ranches in Point Reyes attract unnatural concentrations of ravens. I am glad the article mentions that. What is not mentioned is that NPS is currently being sued over the wildly unpopular and unscientific plan to continue ranching in Point Reyes.

Why You Should Not Store Food in Your Car at Great Smoky Mountains National Park

May 14th - 10:03am | Maples Oak Pinetree

My dad was a ranger and we spent a lot time in the GSMNP when he was off duty as well.  He kept his ranger hat in the car at all times and when came upon a bear that needed to be run off, he would just hold the hat behind his back, walk up to the bear and then put the hat on.
