The graves of former president Jimmy Carter and first lady Rosalynn Carter are now open for public viewing at Jimmy Carter National Historical Park in Plains, Georgia.

The couple is buried in a memorial garden designed by Rosalynn Carter and overlooks a pond the couple built together and loved to visit. The site is part of Carter Gardens on the grounds of their residence, where the Carters spent their lives after the White House. Rosalynn Carter was buried there after she died in 2023. Jimmy Carter died the following year.

While the home remains closed to the public, the gardens can be accessed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. The site is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Parking adjacent to the site is limited to passenger vehicles only. Oversized vehicles, RVs, or buses cannot be accommodated. Restrooms and additional/oversized parking are about .7 mile away at Plains High School or .4 mile away in downtown Plains.

Leashed pets are permitted on walkways and the south lawn of the gardens.

The town of Plains, which became famous as the Carters' hometown, is about a 2.5-hour drive south from Atlanta. Visitors to Jimmy Carter National Historic Site can also stop in at the Plains High School Visitor Center, Jimmy Carter's boyhood farm and home, and the Plains train depot.

Check the park website for more information and the latest updates, and be sure to prepare for hot weather if visiting in the summer.
