Glacier Point Road at Yosemite National Park is scheduled for rehab in 2021/NPS file

Glacier Point Road in Yosemite National Park is getting to the point where it needs some serious rehabilitation, and park staff currently are looking at having that work done in 2021, which means the road will be closed during the visitor season that year. To explain the process, Yosemite staff has scheduled a public meeting for August 28.

The meeting, in Oakhurst, California, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., will go over the Glacier Point Road Rehabilitation Project. The meeting will be at the Oakhurst Community Center (39800 Fresno Flats Road, Oakhurst, California, 93644).

The Glacier Point Road Rehabilitation Project will address multiple severe safety issues on the ten miles of road located between the intersection to the Badger Pass Ski Area and the Glacier Point Parking Area. Some of the road safety issues that will be addressed in this project include:

* Pulverize and repave ten miles of road between Badger Pass and Glacier Point;

* Repair the narrow hairpin turns between Washburn Point and Glacier Point to address vehicular safety issues;

* Construct additional parking and new vault toilets near the Sentinel Dome Trailhead.

At this community meeting, staff with Yosemite National Park will provide presentations on the project between 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., followed by an open house from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Yosemite staff will be gathering public feedback on the Glacier Point Road Rehabilitation Project at this meeting. National Park Service staff will also provide information on the upcoming roadwork on Tioga Road.

This critical road work on Glacier Point Road is scheduled to begin in spring 2021. Glacier Point Road will be closed for the entire 2021 visitor season, and there will be traffic delays on Glacier Point Road in 2022. More detailed information on this project and all associated public comment materials are currently available at this siteThe public comment period will be open until September 19.

Excellent news. I wil miss going on the road on my way to go backpacking, but the road needs improving. I assume we can park at Badger Pass during the construction.

Is there any way to construct some parking for the hike to Dewey Point and other trailheads on the road?  Visitor traffic will only increase.  I'm sure people would be more inclined to take some of the less traveled hikes if there were enough parking spaces.
