The 2013 Rim Fire was the largest forest fire in California history, and the largest fire in Yosemite history. Burning 400 square miles, the speed and size of the fire was unprecedented. As these unnaturally large fires become more commonplace due to previous fire suppression and climate change, Yosemite National Park is seeing the benefits of carefully allowing smaller, controlled fires on the landscape.

Permission Sought To Buttress Highway 12 From Ocean At Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Time and again through the years storms have pushed the Atlantic Ocean up and over North Carolina 12 that runs the length of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, events that leave residents and visitors alike cut off from the mainland. Now, in an attempt to better protect the highway, North Carolina officials want to build up the beach along a section of the highway just north of Buxton.

When I plot a map of every checklist I’ve ever entered at eBird, it looks like I’m neglected large swaths of the continent. What’s with the interior plains?
