On September 15 the National Park Service will be conducting a monarch butterfly survey at Montezuma Well in Arizona and is in search of some help. From 8 a.m.–10 a.m., rangers will lead volunteers through the process of catching, tagging, and releasing migrating monarch butterflies as they head south to Mexico for the winter.
In a bid to counter development, a group is working, parcel-by-parcel, to establish a corridor flora and fauna can travel north
and south along the Eastern Seaboard.
Friends of the Smokies collected $210,525 in donations during its 24th annual Friends Across the Mountains Telethon from hundreds of callers, online donations, and support from sponsors Dollywood, Mast General Store, Pilot Flying J, and SmartBank. The donations will support the organization’s 25th Anniversary Signature Project to upgrade Great Smoky Mountains National Park's emergency radio systems.
The National Park Service, in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, will soon begin a project to replace the Big Spring Bridge located on State Route 103 over the Big Spring branch at Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The project is scheduled to begin August 27, at which time the existing bridge will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
As part of ongoing efforts to monitor the population of grizzly bears and black bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, biologists with the National Park Service and Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team will be conducting scientific grizzly bear and black bear research operations in Yellowstone National Park from August 21 through October 31.
The National Park Service is looking for volunteers on Saturday, September 22, to help gather seeds from native plants in the prairie at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in Iowa.
As the summer season comes to an end, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site in South Dakota invites the public to celebrate the completion of the new park orientation film, Beneath The Plains: The Minuteman Missile On Alert. This is the first official film produced for the park, and complements the exhibits installed two years ago.
