A plan to crisscross 110 square miles of swampy landscape in a search for oil promises to test the National Park Service's ability to balance the unimpairment of resources with the "enjoyment of privately owned oil and gas interests" at Big Cypress National Preserve, a nearly three-quarters-of-a-million-acre wildland that nurtures endangered species and filters a good portion of the sheet of water that nourishes the "river of grass" on its way into neighboring Everglades National Park.

Music In The American Wild Coming To Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park invites the public to celebrate the National Park Service Centennial with Music in the American Wild for two live performances of music from 11 composers and seven performers, all affiliated with Eastman School of Music in upstate New York. The group is traveling to various national parks in the country and will play two concerts in the park on June 14 and June 15.

Recent record-breaking rain on Hatteras Island has impacted ramps, campgrounds, and roads along Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and another rain event is anticipated this Sunday. It has been reported that up to 14 inches of rain fell on the Outer Banks of North Carolina between Saturday, May 28, and Thursday, June 2.
