You don't have to leave town to explore the wonders of national parks this weekend. While in-person Memorial Day programs will still be held at some national cemeteries and battlefields, nearly 50 national parks across the National Park Service's South Atlantic Gulf region and beyond have joined forces to host a Virtual Campout and Virtual Memorial Day Tribute, giving visitors a chance to experience parks this holiday weekend in a safe way while also creating lasting memories.

The National Park Service Memorial Day Weekend Virtual Campout, hosted by Biscayne National Park, is a three-day social media event offering a host of unique park adventures from 20 parks visitors of all ages can enjoy from the comfort of their own living rooms and backyards. The campout kicks off on Facebook Saturday, May 23 at 3 p.m. Eastern.

The weekend series features a range of videos, activities and livestreams covering topics from history to nature and recreation. Viewers can listen to songs and stories of the national parks with rangers from Biscayne, attend a virtual astronomy program hosted by Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve in Louisiana, learn to set up a Civil War tent at Georgia’s Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park or join in any of the other activities taking place throughout the weekend.

The 2020 National Park Service Virtual Memorial Day Tribute, hosted by Georgia’s Andersonville National Historic Site, salutes America’s fallen soldiers, with participation from 30 parks across 12 states and the District of Columbia. The virtual event is being coordinated by Vicksburg National Military Park and will start on Facebook at 8 a.m. Monday. The commemorative event, spanning more than 13 hours, will feature a series of livestreams, demonstrations and historic talks about the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and beyond, as well as a video montage of park rangers from Maryland to Montana reciting the Gettysburg Address.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
