A man evidently was killed when the car he apparently was in went off the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park near Lipan Point (pictured)/NPS
The body of a California man has been recovered 200 feet below the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, while the car he apparently was in lies another 800 feet lower in the canyon.
Park officials said the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call Sunday evening from a local resident reporting a car below the rim near Lipan Point on Desert View Drive. On Monday, the National Park Service helicopter crew "located a vehicle approximately 1000 feet below the rim and a body about 200 feet below the rim. Rangers hiked in today and recovered the body of a California male. Identification of the man is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin."
How the car, and the man, went off the South Rim is being investigated by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
