Barring cloudy skies, some great stargazing from Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Indiana is planned for early next month.
On February 6 members from various astronomical societies, including the Chicago Astronomical Society, will set out their telescopes to get a closer look at the night skies over the lakeshore. This program will take place at the national lakeshore's Kemil Beach parking lot, beginning at 5:30 pm. In celebration of the National Park Service Centennial and the 50th birthday of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, a special stargazing program is being offered on the first Saturday of the month through November.
During February, the brightest stars of the year are overhead. Sirius, Procyon, Rigel, Betelgeuse, Aldebaran, Castor, Pollux and Capella as well as the great nebula of Orion put on a spectacular show when the skies are clear and the moon is absent. The societies will bring their telescopes so visitors can get a closer look at the night sky, but feel free to bring a pair of binoculars from home, too. Please be sure to dress for the weather as there is no building or restrooms to warm up in.
The Kemil Beach parking lot is located at 27 N. East State Park Road, Chesterton, Indiana.
