Should the off-road vehicle regs at Cape Hatteras National Seashore be tweaked?/Kurt Repanshek

As directed by Congress, Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials are looking at changes to how they manage off-road vehicles on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. And in the coming weeks the public will have a chance to bring its thoughts to the table as to how the management plan might be tweaked.

Specifically, seashore officials are looking at the morning opening of beaches, whether to extend the length of fall and spring seasonal ORV routes, and modifying the size and location of vehicle free areas.

Public scoping will help inform the development of alternatives that will be analyzed in an Environmental Assessment. The EA will be prepared in response to the Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2015 pertaining to the deashore’s ORV plan.

The five public meetings are:

* August 5, 5:30 p.m.– 7:30 p.m. – Ocracoke School, 1 Schoolhouse Road Ocracoke Island, NC 27960

* August 6, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. – McKimmon Conference & Training Center, 1101 Gorman Street, NC State University Campus, Raleigh, NC 27695

* August 10, 6 p.m.– 8 p.m. –Cape Hatteras Secondary School, 48576 Hwy 12, Buxton, NC 27920

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.

We were there this spring for several weeks. Wildlife--seabirds, plovers, sea turtle, etc.-- cannot thrive when their nesting habitat is being reduced and destroyed.

Anonymous, you are missing the point completely. What's really important in America these days is the fear that profits of local businesses cannot thrive when resources that feed them are protected. Some of those liberal environmental wackos might argue that if the resources are no longer protected, there may some day be no reason for anyone to visit them. But all of us who know where America's values should lie know how foolish that idea really is. After all, when the resources are gone and businesses finally tank, they will have been long sold to suckers and their present owners will be long gone into profitable retirement. Please don't fall for the left wing propaganda that runs rampant on sites like this one.

Remember the environmental motto of Wall Street: Multiply, multiply and pillage the earth.
