Heavy fog and cloud cover filled the Grand Canyon on Thursday, making it difficult for crews to repair a broken water line on the canyon floor/NPS
Overnight stays at Phantom Ranch on the floor of the Grand Canyon were temporarily halted Thursday due to a break in the Trans-Canyon Water Pipeline, Grand Canyon National Park officials said.
Adding to the problem was bad weather that was delaying delivery of equipment crews needed for repairs. As a result, not only have overnight stays been stopped, but visitors hiking to Phantom Ranch must be self-sufficient and be prepared to carry or treat all drinking water.
All Grand Canyon National Park trails remain open.
Park officials said they didn't know how long it would take for the pipeline to be repaired. The National Weather Service had issued a hazardous weather outlook for the park beginning Thursday and continuing through next Wednesday. The forecast called for continued low cloud cover, fog and visibility that may drop to a quarter mile or less, plus wind gusts between 35-45 mph through Friday afternoon and Saturday.
Pipeline breaks are not uncommon and the National Park Service is usually able to maintain operations without significant disruptions to visitors, the park release said.
All other park operations remain normal. Visitors planning a trip to Phantom Ranch in the next several days may also contact the park's Backcountry Information Center (928)-638-7875 and/or Xanterra South Rim LLC (928)-638-2631.
