A telephoto view of Kilauea Iki Trail, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

A wide-angle morning view looking down on the flat, solifidied lava lake of the Kilauea Iki Trail, with the Pu‘u Pua‘i cinder cone in the background and a smoking Halemaumau Crater in the distance in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

Picture in your mind a roiling, brilliant orange-red lava lake spewed forth from a cinder cone spewing ash and pumice in addition to lava. Now, picture this same scene, only solidified and flat, with bright green ferns and the brilliant red blooms of the ohia lehua growing here and there upon the black-gray pahoehoe and 'a'a lava rock, all surrounded by a lush rain forest, with a trail running through it. This is what you'll see along the Kilauea Iki Trail, one of the most popular hikes in the park.
