Though trumpeter swans have never been listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act, there long have been concerns about their population numbers. In a bid to boost those numbers, eight young trumpeter swans were recently set free at Alum Creek in Yellowstone National Park's Hayden Valley.

A congressman from Utah has introduced legislation to create a sixth national park out of remnants of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument that President Trump, in a move being contested in court, broke into pieces and reduced in size.

But they could vanish from some of those park settings if whitebark pines vanish, according to new research. And without the birds, new stands of whitebark pine might never get planted.
