An impressive noctural light display at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, may be responsible for a recent small but noticeable uptick in travel to the Big Island and the park this month. With Hawaii’s national park visitation way down, even a minor boost in visitation is very welcome.

Pruning the Parks: It Took the Park Service Over 20 Years to Get Out from Under the Kennedy Center (1972-1994)
When Congress added the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to the National Park System on June 16, 1972, the Park Service acquired a difficult and expensive set of managerial obligations not fitting well with its traditional functions. Abolishing this NPS unit in 1994 was the right thing to do.
Apparent Fall Attributed For Death of Concession Worker at Yosemite National Park
There's been another death in Yosemite National Park. Rangers say a 23-year-old concession company employee from Florida apparently fell to his death from a cliff above Mirror Lake in the Yosemite Valley.

In the early 1900s, some national parks existed, but getting to them was problematic. Then was born the idea to develop a "National Park-to-Park Highway," one that would run through 11 states and connect 13 national parks.

Another Marina Fire At Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed two 37-foot cabin cruisers at the Wahweap Marina in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Update: Officials Release Name of Half Dome Victim
The hiker killed in a fall from Half Dome on Saturday afternoon was a 40-year man from of San Ramon, California.
