We had come to Canyonlands National Park from North Carolina, Texas, Colorado, Virginia, Missouri, Utah, and California, determined to spend six leisurely days floating the Green and Colorado rivers through one of the most remote, rugged, and majestic regions of the continental United States. Paleontology was not on our itinerary, but geologic history lay in every direction here in southeastern Utah.

A Texas company's hopes to conduct seismic testing with "thumper trucks" in Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida might have been dashed by a U.S. senator's request that the Interior Department conduct a "comprehensive" review of the proposal.

Interior Secretary, Park Service Director To Honor National African American History Month

In honor of National African American History Month, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis, and NPS Deputy Director Peggy O’Dell will host events at national parks across the country during February. As part the Every Kid in a Park initiative, the secretary, director and deputy director will invite local fourth graders to participate and learn about African Americans’ contributions to the nation’s history and culture.
