A search and rescue mission was ongoing Monday at Grand Canyon National Park for two backcountry hikers swept down Tapeats Creek.

The National Park Service says work to rehabilitate the southwest corner of the Fire Island Lighthouse terrace, undermined in 2012 during Hurricane Sandy, was to begin Monday. Visitor access may be rerouted to the lighthouse’s northern entrance during the project, slated for completion by June.

The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is scheduled to open May 15 with limited visitor services and water conservation measures due to a break in the North Rim water pipeline. This damaged water line does not affect South Rim or Phantom Ranch operations.

While the federal hiring freeze has been lifted by the Trump administration, its guidelines for Reforming the Federal Government and Reducing the Federal Civilian Workforce, as a memo sent out last week from the executive director of the Office of Management and Budget stated in its subject line, carries an ominous message for the National Park Service.
