Heavy rains have flooded sections of the historic Chilkoot Trail at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Alaska, leading park officials to close the trail to all use for the immediate future.
The National Weather Service on Friday issued a flood warning after the Taiya River reached moderate flood stage of 17.5 feet. Flooding submerged sections of the Chilkoot Trail with hazardous, swift-flowing, waist-deep water in places. Heavy rains forecasted for Friday morning suggest increasing river levels through the evening, with the river not likely receding to below moderate flood state until later in the weekend.
Park officials will assess conditions daily to determine if the trail can be reopened. Contact the Trail Center at 907-983-9234 for the latest trail conditions and closure information.
