Steam Festival Coming To Golden Spike National Historical Park

The Jupiter locomotive will be featured at Golden Spike's Annual Winter Steam Festival/NPS

Relive the past late next week when steam-belching locomotives take to the tracks at Golden Spike National Historical Park in northern Utah.

The park, which celebrates the joining of the tracks for the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, will stage its annual Winter Steam Festival on December 28, 29, and 30. 

The Central Pacific locomotive Jupiter will be featured for this year's steam demonstrations. The Jupiter will run throughout the day along the historic Transcontinental Railroad grade where visitors will have the opportunity to smell, hear, see, and feel the power of this Victorian-era locomotive, transporting visitors back to the 1860s. 

Daily Festival Locomotive Steam Demonstrations:

  • 10 a.m.           Jupiter locomotive arrives 
  • 11:30 a.m.           locomotive demonstration run 
  • 1 p.m.             Locomotive demonstration run 
  • 3 p.m.             Locomotive demonstration run  
  • 4:30 p.m.             Jupiter locomotive departs 

Other activities will include locomotive cab tours, hand-car and motor car rides. 

Visitor center winter hours: Thursday-Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Tuesday and Wednesday. All outdoor attractions are accessible seven days a week, including the Last Spike Site, the Big Fill Trail, East Auto Tour, as well as the visitor center picnic areas and restrooms. 

This event is open to the public and the entrance fee is $20 per vehicle. Activities are subject to change based on weather conditions and mechanical operations. The visitor center will be closed December 25th in observance of the Christmas holiday.

Golden Spike National Historical Park is located 32 miles west of Brigham City via state highways 13 and 83.
