A special Halloween walking tour is planning at Allegheny Railroad Portage National Historic Site/NPS

What better day than Halloween to learn about the darker side of life and death on the Portage Railroad at Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site in Pennsylvania?

On that day there will be candlelit tours of the railroad to learn about the hazards that workers and travelers of the 1830s and 1840s faced as they crossed the Allegheny Mountains.

These family-friendly tours will be held every 20 minutes beginning at 6 p.m. until 9 a.m. Space for the 50-minute tours is limited to 10 people per tour, and you have to reserve a spot. Reservations can be made by calling 814-886-6150.

Park staff ask that you arrive on time for your scheduled tour. Due to the size restraint on the tours, no exceptions will be made to accommodate visitors on other tour times other than the reserved time. To ensure the safety of visitors and staff, masks and social distancing are encouraged.

In the event of inclement weather, the event may be cancelled. Check the local media outlets and/or the park website for details.
