National Park Sites Closing In Advance Of Hurricane Delta

Some units of the National Park System on the north coast of the Gulf of Mexico were closing in advance of Hurricane Delta/National Hurricane Center

As Hurricane Delta turned into a major hurricane as it churned its way across the Gulf of Mexico, some units of the National Park System on the northern coast of the gulf began shutting down to prepare for the storm.

In New Orleans, all six sites of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, as well as New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, closed at 5 p.m. CDT on Tuesday. No decision has been reached as to a reopening date.

The following areas closed:

  • Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve Headquarters and French Quarter Visitor Center, 419 Decatur Street, New Orleans
  • Barataria Preserve, 6588 Barataria Boulevard, Marrero
  • Chalmette Battlefield and National Cemetery, 8606 West St. Bernard Highway, Chalmette
  • Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, 314 St. Mary Street, Thibodaux
  • Acadian Cultural Center, 501 Fisher Road, Lafayette
  • Prairie Acadian Cultural Center, 250 West Park Avenue, Eunice
  • New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Headquarters (419 Decatur Street) and visitor center (916 North Peters Street), New Orleans

At Gulf Islands National Seashore to the east, the Mississippi areas and islands including Horn, Petit Bois, West Petit Bois, and the Park Service-owned portion of Cat Island was scheduled to close Wednesday at 5 p.m. A mandatory evacuation of the Davis Bayou Campground will occur Wednesday, with all campers expected to leave the area by 12 p.m.
