The National Park Service will chart a new course for an acre of waterfront land adjacent to the Golden Gate Bridge in Fort Baker.
The National Park Service has released a Request for Qualifications for prospective partners to rehabilitate Fort Baker's historic boat shop and marina complex and operate a waterfront community center at the site. This project implements the vision laid out in Golden Gate National Recreation Area's 2000 Fort Baker master plan and environmental impact statement.
“This is a unique site, with stunning views of the Golden Gate Strait. It also has a rich history as a place where active military and veterans go to relax and take their boats out on the bay,” said Golden Gate National Recreation Area Superintendent Laura E. Joss. “We seek a proposal that allows the site to reach its full potential, while offering an experience that is welcoming to all.”
The project will redevelop four historic structures, with the lease of the marina as an additional optional program element. Respondents will be asked to provide a diverse mix of programs and services including, but not limited to:
-
Event venue
-
Food and beverage
-
Restrooms
-
Educational programs that may include maritime themes such as sailing and boatbuilding
-
Optional public marina that accommodates up to 60 boats primarily for day use and community programs
Fort Baker is already home to the Cavallo Point Lodge, the Bay Area Discovery Museum, Travis Air Force Base Marina/Presidio Yacht Club, and U.S. Coast Guard Station Golden Gate. Habitat restoration, trail enhancements, and infrastructure improvements have also been completed. The boat shop and marina represent the last stage of Fort Baker’s post-to-park transformation that began in 2000. The National Park Service anticipates the selected partner will begin rehabilitation of the complex in 2020-21, with an expected 20-year lease for operations. The public will have opportunities to learn about the submissions during both the request for qualifications and request for proposals stages.
