Solar-powered vehicles will start a 1,700-mile endurance rally this weekend from the Lewis and Clark Historic Trail headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska/NPS file

How far can solar power take you? That's a question that could be answered in the coming week when the American Solar Challenge kicks off an endurance rally from Omaha, Nebraska, at the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail headquarters.

The historic trail headquarters will be hosting the start of this 1,700-mile rally on Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The solar cars will be on display at the Lewis and Clark Landing on Friday  from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. The event will include live music, historical reenactors, and food trucks.

The solar cars will start their westward journey on Saturday at 8 a.m., departing from the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Headquarters and Visitor Center at 601 Riverfront Drive in Omaha. Both events are free and open to the public.

From July 14-22, the American Solar Challenge will feature collegiate solar car teams in a road rally style following portions of the Oregon National Historic Trail and other trails through Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon.

In partnership with the National Park Service, this event will help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System and the 175th anniversary of the Oregon Trail. Various stops along the route will give visitors the unique opportunity to see the solar cars, meet the teams, participate in local activities, and contrast stories from the past with the possibilities of the future.
