Share

Effigy Mounds National Monument is being honored with a special quarter/US Mint

The first quarter to be released in 2017 under the United States Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters Program will feature Iowa’s Effigy Mounds National Monument. The coin design showcases an aerial view of two bears and one bird effigy mound from the Marching Bear Group in the South Unit of the monument.

Two free events will take place to commemorate the quarter launch. The Coin Collector Forum will be held for the public to hear about the United States Mint and their coin programs on February 6 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Effigy Mounds National Monument Visitor Center.

The main event will be the Quarter Launch and Coin Exchange, to be held at the Waukon High School Gym at 10 a.m. February 7 in Waukon, Iowa. This event will feature a ceremony showcasing the new coin, with a variety of special guests. Immediately following the ceremony, attendees can exchange $10 for a roll of the newly minted quarters (10-roll maximum).

The coin exchange is sponsored by Kerndt Brothers Saving Bank in Waukon. All children 18 and younger will receive a free Effigy Mounds quarter provided by the U.S. Mint. Additionally, students in grades K-5 will receive the redesigned Effigy Mounds National Monument Junior Ranger badge, which incorporates the new America the Beautiful design. Waukon High School is located at 1059 3rd Avenue N.W., Waukon, IA 52172.

Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds, including some in the shape of animals. The monument is located three miles north of Marquette, Iowa, and 22 miles south of Waukon, Iowa, on Highway 76.
