DOI/NPS Website Woes Drag On For Fifth Day

Website woes continued Wednesday for at least the fifth day for the Interior Department and the National Park Service, leaving web surfers with an onslaught of "page not found" errors while trying to navigate park websites.

NPS spokesmen in both the agency's Denver and Washinton headquarters didn't know exactly what caused the problem, and an Interior spokeswoman who wouldn't discuss the incident over the phone did not immediately respond to an email request for information.

A story in the Washington Times on Tuesday attributed the problem to a power outage in Interior's Denver facility where its servers are based, but provided no additional details.

An email sent out Tuesday by Bernard J. Mazer, Interior's chief information officer, shed little light on the problem.

"Many of you have noticed that Interior's website,, and internal website, oneINTERIOR, have both been out of service since Friday. We regret the inconvenience this outage is causing employees and site visitors," he wrote. "Our websites and servers continue to experience technical difficulties. The Department's IT teams are working diligently to restore service as soon as possible. Currently, we do not have an estimated time when the sites will be fully restored. We will provide you with updated information once it is available."
