Share

Now this would be an interesting trip. Imagine going to both Zion and Grand Canyon national parks on the same winter road trip? It won't necessarily be easy, but there are some lodging offers out there that can make it a little easier on your wallet.

At Zion National Park in southwestern Utah, Zion Lodge in the heart of the park is offering reduced rates this winter.

“A trip to Zion typically features comfortable temperatures in the 50s and 60s during the day and plenty of opportunities for guests to enjoy spectacular hiking and scenery,” said Daisy Hobbs, general manager of Zion Lodge. “The pace here is slow then, and it is easy to find yourself in the relaxation zone.”

The Winter Magic in Zion package includes an overnight stay and features breakfast for two each morning. From Dec. 1, 2012, through March 15, 2013, this package rate for a Sunday-through-Thursday stay is $99 for a standard room, $109 for a Western Cabin and $119 for a suite. On Fridays and Saturdays, the rates are $10 higher.

The rates are $124 for a standard room, $134 for a Western Cabin and $144 for a suite during the holiday periods of Dec. 24-30, 2012 and Feb. 16-18, 2013. Each additional person over the age of 16 in the room is $10 with breakfast available for purchase separately. The Winter Magic package is not available on Dec. 31, 2012. Guests should mention the promotion code “WNTR” when making reservations.

Zion Lodge also offers a New Year’s Eve Celebration Package featuring a deluxe New Year’s Eve dinner in the Red Rock Grill, followed by a special midnight reception and toast to welcome in the new year and a New Year’s Day brunch. The rates are $209 for a standard room, $214 for a Western Cabin and $224 for a suite plus taxes and gratuities for two people in a standard room. Guests should reference the promotion code “NYE” for the New Year’s Eve package.

The President’s Weekend Package features two nights of accommodations Feb. 15 and 16 or Feb. 16 and 17, 2013, a gift shop coupon good for 20 percent off products made in the United States, a president-themed dinner for two Feb. 16 and breakfast buffet for two each morning. The two-night package rates are $268 in a standard room, $288 in a cabin and $308 in a suite. Guests should reference the promotion code “PRES” for the President’s Weekend package.

The Winter Magic, New Year’s Eve and President’s Weekend offers can be booked online with the applicable promotion code or by following the link to the promotions page at www.zionlodge.com or by calling 1-303-29-PARKS (1-303-297-2757) or toll-free at 1-888-29-PARKS (1-888-297-2757). All of the above quoted rates are based on double occupancy, does not include taxes, gratuities or park entrance fees.

Zion National Park’s world-class hikes include The Narrows up the Virgin River and Emerald Pools not far from Zion Lodge. The climb up to Angels Landing features switchbacks called Walter’s Wiggles, and the last half-mile portion of the hike is truly a white knuckler. In all, there are some 200 miles of picturesque trails in Zion National Park.

Other exciting activities at Zion include climbing, backpacking, canyoneering and bird watching. Zion Canyon and the rest of the park are also renowned for their texture and light that appeal to photographers of every level.

Zion Lodge offers 82 rooms, 40 cabins, a restaurant and gift shop. The park is renowned for its sightseeing and hiking and is open year round. Most hiking trails are open throughout the winter.

Once you leave Zion, you can head south to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Concessioner Xanterra South Rim is making a winter visit there a little less expensive with reduced rates at Maswik Lodge and a couples package at the historic El Tovar.

“The Canyon is serene and beautiful in the winter, and our guests seem to be quieter and perhaps more introspective than they are in the summer,” said Jon Streit, general manager of Xanterra South Rim. “We see lots of guests perched on a rock and simply staring at the vastness of the park, or waiting quietly with their cameras for the perfect light of sunset. I think travelers are drawn here because they are seeking inspiration.”

Rates at Maswik Lodge, one of Xanterra’s two off-rim lodges, drop now through March 7, 2013. And the historic El Tovar is offering a Romance Package from late November through mid-February as well, an exceptional bargain for couples seeking to rekindle their relationship in an awe-inspiring location.

Long considered the crown jewel of the Grand Canyon hotels, El Tovar features 78 rooms fashioned after European hunting lodges. Constructed in 1905 by the Santa Fe Railroad using native stone and Oregon pine, El Tovar offers a gift shop, dining room, lounge and sightseeing tours.

The Winter Value rate at Maswik Lodge is $85 per night plus tax at Maswik South and $115 per night at Maswik North. No promo codes are required to receive the Winter Value rate.

Guests who need more time to enjoy this natural wonder’s premier hiking trails or explore Grand Canyon Village’s fascinating history and architecture may stay at least two nights at Maswik North and receive an additional discount and pay $95 – the same rate offered in winter 2011-12 – per night plus tax. This rate requires at least two consecutive nights and the promo code is “STAY2” when making reservations.

The one- and two-night Winter Value Rates are available from now through March 7, 2013, excluding Dec. 21 – 31, 2012. The rates are valid for single or double occupancy. The cost for each additional person in the room is $9. Children 16 and under stay in the same room at no extra charge. Lodge and room type are subject to availability and seasonal closures. Summer and holiday rates at this hotel ranges from $92 to $176 per night.

If needed, Xanterra will open and offer the winter rate at Yavapai Lodge where room rates will be $85 per night plus tax at Yavapai West and $115 per night at Yavapai East.

Maswik Lodge is a 278-room facility located a short walk from the South Rim and at the southwest end of Grand Canyon Village. Named for a Hopi Kachina who is said to guard the Grand Canyon, Maswik features a gift shop, cafeteria, lounge, rooms with private baths and sightseeing tours.

The El Tovar Romance Package at the elegant El Tovar includes one night in a standard queen room, a bottle of California sparkling wine and fruit basket in the room and dinner for two with a bottle of Grand Canyon label wine in the El Tovar Dining Room. The base package cost is $380 plus tax subject to availability. Guests may upgrade to a deluxe room or suite, based upon availability, for an additional charge. The Romance Package is available now through Feb. 14, 2013, excluding Dec. 8, 2012, Dec. 22, 2012 through Jan. 1, 2013 and Jan. 9, 2013. When booking the Romance Package online, guests must enter the promo code “ROMANCE.”

Xanterra also operates restaurants, gift shops and mule rides. Popular activities for visitors include riding Grand Canyon Railway, taking a motorcoach tour, searching for one of the rarest birds in the world – the California condor, stargazing, shopping at the Hopi House & Gallery, hiking and taking a village walking tour featuring El Tovar, the Bright Angel History Room, Hopi House, Kolb Studio and Lookout Studio.

Visitors can book their rooms online by visiting www.grandcanyonlodges.com or by calling toll-free 1-888-297-2757 or 1-303-297-2757 from outside the United States. You can learn more about the park by visiting www.nps.gov/grca
