A 23-year-old Colorado man who reportedly summited Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park failed to return as planned, sparking a search effort Monday by park rangers.

A historic tram tower built more than a century ago to haul salt out of Death Valley was recently toppled in Death Valley National Park, possibly by a motorist who attached a winch to the tower to pull a vehicle out of the muck, according to park staff.

A major preservation project expected to begin in July will focus on more than a dozen historic structures at Hampton National Historic Site, which preserves and interprets the core of a historic plantation that dates to the 1700s and once encompassed 25,000 acres in western Maryland.
