Down through the past four years there have been multiple communications, and meetings, between the Obama administration and Utah politicians and communities over the possibility of national monument status for the Bears Ears landscape in southeastern Utah, according to documents obtained by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

The National Park Service has designated Rainbow Bridge a Traditional Cultural Property, recognizing the national monument's historic and ongoing cultural significance to at least six American Indian tribes, and establishing its listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Rainbow Bridge National Monument is the first site in Utah to gain a TCP designation.
