"Starve the beast," a phrase fashionable with fiscally conservative politicians dating to the mid-1980s, has returned in full force to Congress, where U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva worries about how national parks and public lands in general will fare if Republicans aren't checked.

Grand Canyon National Park on Monday will begin daily closures of the North Kaibab Trail at Redwall Bridge to remove debris from a storm-caused rockslide. During this time, rim-to-rim travel will be restricted.

While the wildfire burning in Big Cypress National Park in Florida has expanded to more than 25,000 acres, fire crews have been able to build containment lines around 40 percent of the blaze, according to a park release.

Lush deep shade and a gently curving scenic road are two landscape features that make the Natchez Trace Parkway a pleasant recreational route for both motorists and bicyclists. Those features that make traveling the Parkway enjoyable can sometimes reduce visibility for both drivers and bicyclists. New signs, funded through the Natchez Trace Parkway Association Gary Holdiness Cycling Fund, will raise motorist awareness and remind drivers that bicycles, as well as other motor vehicles, use the Parkway.
