Convictions Returned In Archaeological Theft At Ozark National Scenic Riverways

Two Missouri residents who ignored the adage that you never return to the scene of a crime have been convicted of stealing archaeological objects from Ozark National Scenic Riverways, with one being sent to prison and the other placed on supervised probation. The damage they did to the site they poached, however, "has irreparably hindered our ability to learn at this location forever," park staff said.

Craftsmanship flowed through the main building and surrounding cabins the Civilian Conservation Corps built above the Current River in the hill country of southeastern Missouri. But the passage of nearly nine decades has taken a toll on the Big Springs Lodge and Cabins at today's Ozark National Scenic Riverways, where the National Park Service shuttered the buildings four years ago until they could be rehabilitated.

Big Spring Bridge At Ozark National Scenic Riverways To Close For Replacement

The National Park Service, in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, will soon begin a project to replace the Big Spring Bridge located on State Route 103 over the Big Spring branch at Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The project is scheduled to begin August 27, at which time the existing bridge will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Restoration Of Ozark National Scenic Riverways Infrastructure Following Flood Takes Time

Work is proceeding at Ozark National Scenic Riverways to repair facilities that were damaged during last year's flooding at the park. While some heavily damaged locations will remain partially or totally closed, or operate with reduced amenities, much progress has been made and additional areas will be open in 2018, according to the National Park Service.
