Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Protects A Portal To Lake Michigan

We hiked through the trees, towards a break in the canopy that told us Lake Michigan was just up ahead. My mom and I had been driving mere minutes before, pulling a U-turn when a brown sign told us that an Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore access point sat less than a mile away. Having never before seen one of the famous Great Lakes, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to view the ocean-like vista with my own two eyes.

New Pathway To The Beach At National Lakeshore’s Portage Lakefront

Work on a new path to the Portage Lakefront at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Indiana has been completed. This path replaces the one that was destroyed by early spring storms. Those storms also caused the collapse of a viewing platform at the site. In addition to the trail work, volunteers and staff from both the City of Portage and the National Park Service removed a large amount of storm debris from the beach.

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Campground Opens March 30

The 2018 camping season at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Dunewood Campground starts on Friday, March 30. and runs through October 31. This National Park Service campground features 53 conventional drive-in sites and 12 walk-in sites. There are no electrical hookups, but there are modern restrooms and showers available. All sites are $25 per night.

Time To Make Maple Sugar At Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Enjoy a taste of spring at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore's 40th annual Maple Sugar Time festival. In addition to the free, ranger-led tours of the sugaring operation at historic Chellberg Farm, a pancake breakfast will be available for purchase from the Chesterton Lion's Club. The farm will be bustling with maple sugaring activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekends of March 3-4 and March 10-11.

Mount Baldy Trail Reopens At Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

The National Park Service has announced that the trail to the beach at Mount Baldy at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore has been reopened. The trail had been closed for several weeks after storm waves washed out a portion of it leaving a dangerous, 50-foot drop off. Park crews have now completed a rerouted trail and have reopened the area.

4th Annual Indiana Dunes Birding Festival Set For May

Celebrate the migration of birdlife through the Indiana Dunes region on May 17-20 at the Fourth Annual Indiana Dunes Birding Festival. The festival is a partnership of the region’s major environmental groups highlighting the dunes area’s rich biodiversity and bird watching opportunities to create a positive impact on the economic, conservation, and environmental education for visitors and residents to the Indiana Dunes region
