Climbers upset over closures at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia and Virginia have written letters to park officials to express their frustration, and now are pushing a public campaign to persuade park officials to open the areas.

The National Park Service is seeking comment on its plan to reduce overabundant deer populations that threaten the natural beauty and historic scenery at Harpers Ferry and Chesapeake & Ohio Canal national historical parks.

As Winter Storm Jonas delivered a pounding to the Northeast on Saturday, national park units in the mid-Atlantic region were shuttered and some planned to remain closed through Sunday.
