Former NPS Official Found To Have Overlooked Environmental Regs Said To Be Next Acting Director

A former top National Park Service official implicated more than a decade ago for improperly paving the way for the owner of the Washington Redskins to cut down trees on a 2-acre scenic easement along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park is expected to become the agency's next acting director, possibly as soon as next week, National Parks Traveler has learned.

$3.45 Million Awarded To The C&O Canal For Canal Rewatering And Towpath Improvements

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park has been awarded $3.45 million from the Transportation Alternatives Program through the Maryland Department of Transportation thanks to the vocal support of the C&O Canal Trust and the greater canal community: $2.45 million for “A Rewatered Canal” and $1 million for “Towpath Rehabilitation: A Safe Towpath.”

C&O Canal Park Ranger Honored For Interpretation And Eduction Excellence

A park ranger from Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park has been honored with the National Park Service's highest honor for excellence in interpretation and education. Hollie Lynch, the park's education coordinator, received the 2017 Freeman Tilden Award for her role in developing and implementing a series of innovative curriculum-based park programs for 200 schools in Maryland, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

Chesapeake And Ohio Canal National Historical Park Searching For CCC Stories From African Americans

The C&O Canal Trust, in partnership with the C&O Canal National Historical Park, is searching for stories from African-American workers of the Civilian Conservation Corps who worked along the C&O Canal from 1938-1942. Workers themselves or descendants of workers are encouraged to contact the park to share memories from their time along the canal, for use in a new exhibit to be housed in Canal Quarters’ Lockhouse 10.
