Having just gone through the 2020 presidential election, what better time to talk about the symbol of American democracy – the bald eagle. The bald eagle first appeared on the Great Seal of the United States in 1782 – holding in its talons an olive branch and 13 arrows. Less than 200 years later, the national bird of the United States was nearly extinct.

History resides in the Chesapeake Bay watershed that hasn't fully been documented. Black history, specifically. But now a partnership of organizations including the National Park Service will work to map and identify sites and landscapes in the watershed region significant to African American history and culture.

Spring Runoff Producing Larger-Than-Average "Dead Zone" In Chesapeake Bay

Four years ago a multi-state agreement was written to focus on restoring and protecting the Chesapeake Bay and its feeder streams. Unfortunately, researchers who monitor the health of the bay now are forecasting a larger-than-average Chesapeake Bay "dead zone" in 2018, due to increased rainfall in the watershed this spring.

Visitor Center Hits The Road At Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail

Last weekend, the “Roving Ranger,” a new mobile visitor center for the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, made its inaugural voyage to Mallows Bay on the Potomac River. The vehicle is the size of a delivery truck and features large images of the Chesapeake Bay on all sides.
