In The Wake Of Conquistadors: Cabrillo National Monument

The view eastward from Point Loma, at just 422 feet above the Pacific, encompasses San Diego Bay, the city skyline, and the low silhouette of the Laguna Mountains against a brilliant sky. To the west, the surf pounds rocky cliffs and the steely-blue ocean stretches to the horizon. In 1542, Spanish conquistador Juan Cabrillo, the first “tourist,” gazed across the scenic landscape from this same viewpoint.

Entrance Fees Going Up At Cabrillo National Monument

Entrance fees to Cabrillo National Monument in California will bump up January 5 in a move park officials say will help them pay for "important maintenance and improvement projects within the park."

Of Gray Whales, National Parks, and Climate Change

Migrating gray whales are a common sight in the nearshore waters of the Pacific Coast, and two of the region’s national parks are whale watching hotspots. Now the timing of the gray whale migrations has shifted perceptibly, fewer whales are passing close to shore, and whale watchers will need to be more flexible.
