Search for Hiker in Wrangell-St. Elias Suspended

Share

Officials in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve have greatly scaled back the search for a 68-year-old Wisconsin man, saying there's little hope of finding him alive.

Paul Schoch has been missing since September 17. Searchers have been concentrating on the area around the Russell Glacier, as they think footprints spotted along a moraine there could be from Schoch.

Schoch's camp was found intact and holding most of his provisions, leading rangers to believe he was not prepared for an extended stay away from his camp.

The lack of leads has prompted park officials to suspend aerial searches for the man, although routine ground patrols in the area will continue as long as weather allows.
