Earthquake Discussions, Traditional Weaving, And Hula Performances Help Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park Celebrate Its Centennial

An eclectic mix of activities -- from discussions of earthquakes and hula demonstrations to weaving skills and park history -- will be open to the public at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park during the month of November.

Site Of Sir Francis Drake's Ship Grounding Honored At Point Reyes National Seashore

Nearly four decades before the settlement of Jamestown, Englishman Francis Drake navigated the Pacific Coast of California. In his attempt to return to England, he careened his ship and established a temporary encampment while repairs to the ship were made. The designation of the Drakes Bay Historic and Archeological District at Point Reyes National Seashore recognizes the historic and archeological evidence identifying Drakes Bay as the most likely site of Francis Drake’s California Landing in 1579, signifying one of the earliest instances of European contact and interaction with the native peoples on the west coast, the Coast Miwok Indians.

Stormy Forecast Has Olympic National Park Shutting Things Down, Mount Rainier Visitors Warned

A stormy forecast for the rest of the week has Olympic National Park staff in Washington state shutting down some roads and campgrounds as a precaution, while visitors to Mount Rainier National Park were warned to expect blizzard conditions and heavy snows. With a series of powerful storms forecast to begin later today, Olympic officials warned that high winds and very heavy rain were anticipated, raising the risk of falling trees and limbs, flooding and road damage.

Portion Of Going-to-the-Sun Road In Glacier National Park Closed

The Going-to-the-Sun-Road in Glacier National Park is closed for the season from Avalanche on the west side to the Jackson Glacier overlook on the east side. A severe winter snowstorm followed by temperatures below freezing created unsafe traveling conditions along the alpine section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, park officials said Wednesday.

UPDATED: Company Applies For Permit To Build Oil Refinery Near Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Plans to build an oil refinery, with supporting infrastructure that would include 1,000 residential units and a commercial development, just three miles from the entrance to Theodore Roosevelt National Park are moving forward, with the company filing its application for a permit to start construction on the proposed Davis Refinery.
