UPDATED: Obama Administration Withdraws 30,000 Acres Near Yellowstone From New Mining Claims

Obama administration officials, in a move welcomed by the business and conservation community near Yellowstone National Park, moved Monday to block mining on roughly 30,000 acres of U.S. Forest Service just north of the park, though the action won't necessarily keep two gold mines from going in on private lands in the area, including one that would be visible from the park's north entrance.

Fence Proposed To Keep ORVs, Target Shooters Out Of Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument

Nearly two years after Congress created Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument near Las Vegas, portions of the unit are being damaged by off-road enthusiasts and individuals who haul TVs, furniture, and other junk into the monument for target practice. At least one death has been linked to target shooting. In an effort to prevent such incidents, the National Park Service is proposing to build a fence with hopes of protecting the park.

Crews Moving Tons Of Sand To Stem Erosion From Ocean Beach At Golden Gate National Recreation Area

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, in cooperation with the National Park Service, is leading a short-term effort to transport excess sand via dump truck from north Ocean Beach to two erosion hot spots at south Ocean Beach. The work, performed week days from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., is expected to last through December.

Entrance Fee-Free Days To National Parks Dropping By A Half-Dozen In 2017

The party must be over in 2017. The number of entrance fee-free days in the National Park System is dropping by 40 percent, to just 10 from the 16 you could have taken advantage of this year. Gone are the weeklong free days during National Park Week in April, and a long fee-free weekend in August to celebrate the founding of the National Park Service.
