Cape Hatteras National Seashore and its official non-profit partner, Outer Banks Forever, will restore the interior of the Bodie Island Double Keepers’ Quarters under a partnership project funded by Outer Banks Forever. The historic structure was temporarily closed after an electrical fire in January 2025. Once a contractor repairs the damages, the Seashore plans to install new exhibits on the first floor of the building.
“Restoring the interior of the Bodie Island DKQ, with support from Outer Banks Forever, will allow the Seashore to once again tell the stories of the light station’s important history,” stated David Hallac, superintendent of National Parks of Eastern North Carolina.
The DKQ was originally built in 1872 alongside the Bodie Island Lighthouse and underwent two historic restorations after the property was transferred to the National Park Service in 1953. The building now serves as a ranger office and visitor center for Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
“We're honored to partner with the National Park Service to restore this beloved, historically significant building so park visitors can have an immersive experience learning about the lightkeepers and families who played important roles in Outer Banks and United States maritime history,” said Bryan Burhans, director of Outer Banks Forever.
Work is set to begin this week under a special use permit issued to Outer Banks Forever.
