Massachusetts Couple Dies In Apparent Fall From Dorr Mountain In Acadia National Park

Share

A couple from Massachusetts that came to Acadia National Park in Maine this week for some hiking died in an apparent 100-foot fall from icy Dorr Mountain. Their bodies were recovered Saturday, the park announced.

The unidenified couple, a 28-year-old man and 30-year-old woman, arrived in Bar Harbor on Tuesday from Rutland, Massachusetts, a park release said. The woman had told family members during a phone call that they were interested in hiking Cadillac Mountain. When the couple didn't check out of their hotel on Friday as scheduled or return to their vehicle, a search was launched.

That search continued overnight and involved a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Cape Cod equipped with thermal imaging technology that was used to search for heat signatures on the north and east sides of Dorr and Cadillac Mountains, the park said.

On Saturday morning ground teams began to search in areas of high probability and were able to find and recover their bodies. The two were hiking on Dorr Mountain along ice-covered cliff bands when they apparently slipped and fell to their deaths, the release said.

Park rangers and Maine State Police are investigating, with the assistance of Bar Harbor Police Department.

Rip :c

People falling to their deaths in Zion, Yosemite, and now Acadia National Park are becoming too commonplace in the news.  I am sorry about losing one's life in these beautiful places.May their loved ones find comfort and solace.  Rest in eternal peace.

You have to know when to turn around. Too bad they misjudged.

I am so sorry this happened to them...  I have been  hiking these mountains for years and would NEVER go up there in the winter with ICE....    since it's winter there are also NO one there to help if you do get in to trouble.   May they rest in peace..   I will probably always think of them when I go up the Gorge Path from Cadillac...

Rip Wayne You Were The Best Cousin In Law!

I have hiked all the mountains at Acadia. From Cadillac,St.Savoir to Dorr. They are small but offer some of the best views in the state of Maine.Any fall on ice can be hazardous and life threatening. They were doing what they enjoyed best I just wish the out come wasn't so tragic.May their spirits soar high like the eagles over the beauty of Acadia National Park.
