Trail Closure At Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Share

The need to deepen a section of the Ohio & Erie Canal at Cuyahoga Valley National Park will require a section of the canal's towpath trail to be closed from February 10 through February 21.

The section to be closed during dredging of the canal is between Station Road Bridge Trailhead and Frazee House in Brecksville and Valley View. The trail section will be closed 24 hours a day; no detour is available.

As part of a watershed partnership with that National Park Service, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District is dredging the Ohio & Erie Canal north of Station Road Bridge Trailhead. This section of the canal is part of the Ohio & Erie Canal Historic District within the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

NEORSD will clear sediment and debris from the canal and transport it to a disposal facility. This project will help the park maintain the historic character and restore the water flow in the canal. It is the only watered section within Cuyahoga Valley National Park and supplies water for Lock 38 in front of Canal Exploration Center in Valley View.

The dredging work is being done in preparation for the planned removal of the Brecksville Dam.

I would say this is a good thing considering that I have previously found myself caught in the boil of a low head dam and luckily escaped with my life.  This dam removal will greatly increase public safety for people enjoying kayaking the river.  Also, removing the dam will cause more oxygen to be in the river upstream and should be good for fish and waterfowl too.

Now all we need to do is adda functioning canal boat!
