Texas Poets Laureate Karla K. Morton and Alan Birkelbach

Texas Poets Laureate Karla K. Morton and Alan Birkelbach have written a song in honor of America's national parks.

For many of us, getting out to a national park this week can be a challenge, either because of work, school, weather, or location of the nearest park. Fortunately for us, two poets have written a beautiful song to help us keep the parks in our minds no matter where we are.

Karla K. Morton and Alan Birkelbach are both Texas Poets Laureates, and are award-winning writers with 12 (Morton) and 11 (Birkelbach) published books of poetry. On Monday they released a song, "Go Around," in honor of National Parks Week and Earth Day.

The song’s lyrics were written by Morton and Birkelbach during their quest to visit all 61 U.S. national parks. The music and vocals are by singer-songwriter Lisa Carver, an accomplished performer and recording artist currently living in the high desert of New Mexico. A lifetime of experience and the rugged, natural beauty that currently surrounds her have shaped her music and her distinctive, smoky voice.

The song is available on on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, Google Play, Tidal, Deezer and more. You also can buy a digital copy at https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/lisacarver1

Morton and Birkelbach launched their 61-park quest, titled Words of Preservation Poets Laureate National Parks Tour, toward the end of 2016 with an NPR Wyoming interview and an inspirational visit to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Teton National Park. The poetry duo has visited 44 national parks so far, with an itinerary to visit the remaining parks this year.

Along the way, they have documented their journey through poetry and photography for an upcoming book and presented at national park venues and nearby universities, bookstores and public libraries. TCU Press will publish their forthcoming book, which will be the first of its kind and is expected to be released in 2020.

Throughout their Words of Preservation Tour, Morton and Birkelbach are often asked about their stance on protecting the parks. In short, it is: "Go Around."

"We believe the national parks are America's greatest treasures and must be protected and preserved,” say Morton and Birkelbach.

In the spirit of previous defenders of the outdoors -- like Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Aldo Leopold and John Graves -- Morton and Birkelbach hope to contribute to the exploration, cultural preservation, and protection of the country’s national parks.

“In this digital age, there is no replacement for the grandeur of Mother Nature. Wonder cannot be imported or exported, but it can be captured with words. In our roles as Poets Laureate, we can think of no better treasure to explore and champion than the U.S. National Parks,” said Morton.
