Pump Problems Continue To Leave Grand Canyon National Park Short Of Water

Repairing water pumps is not always an easy task, especially when they're in the Inner Gorge of Grand Canyon National Park. Ongoing problems with the pump at Indian Garden is forcing park staff, employees, and visitors to conserve water. And water retrictions might get tougher this week.

For now, the national park remains in Level 2 water conservation measures, which means dining with disposable dishes and utensils, relying on menus that don't require a lot of water, limiting showers to no more than five minutes, and washing laundry and dishes only with full loads.

If the situation worsens, the park might turn to using hand sanitizer in public restrooms, resorting to portable toilets, dry camping at Mather Campground, and limiting use at employee laundromats.

The public can call 928-638-7688 to listen to a recorded message with updates and additional information as it becomes available. Drinking water is still available in the inner canyon at Indian Garden and Phantom Ranch.
