At least one fatality was confirmed Wednesday following a rockfall that appeared to come from El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

According to a park release, the rockfall "of undetermined size" was reported shortly before 2 p.m. "The release point appeared to be near the Waterfall Route, a popular climbing route on the East Buttress of El Capitan," a park release said. "This is the area where Horsetail Fall flows in winter and spring conditions."

Yosemite rangers and Yosemite Search and Rescue were on the scene Wednesday evening assessing the situation, while the park helicopter was providing assistance from above.

In addition to the unidentified fatality, another individual was injured. The park release did not say whether either was a climber. Park officials could not immediately be reached Wednesday evening.

This is the climbing season in Yosemite, and there are many climbers on El Capitan and other climbing routes in the park, the release said.
