Storms Batter Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Share

Strong winds driven by thunderstorms have littered Apostle Islands National Lakeshore with downed trees, such as these at Cat Island/NPS

A series of thunderstorms has left Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin littered with downed trees, but fortunately all campers have been accounted for and are safe.

The storms swept through the lakeshore early Thursday. Crews were still assessing damage Friday, but "there are numerous downed trees causing campsite and trail closures," the park said. "The storm was spotty in where it caused damage. Islands hit hardest include Cat, Oak, Michigan, Sand and Stockton Islands."

Current closures include:

* Cat Island campsite

* Manitou Island trail

*  Sand Island trail from East Bay to the light station

* Stockton Island campsites 7, 8 and 11

* Stockton Island Julian Bay trail

Further assessments are underway to determine the extent of downed trees blocking other trails. Park staff is working as quickly as possible to re-open high priority campsites and trails.
