Summer's official kickoff is this coming Memorial Day Weekend, and with crowds expected across the National Park System, be sure to pay attention to your surroundings and others in the parks. A Texas woman hoping to photograph a bald eagle near the West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park apparently took her eyes off the road and was hit and killed by oncoming traffic, according to park authorities.
A park release said Wendy Larrabee, 47, died at the scene of the accident on May 18.
It was around 9 a.m. and Ms. Larrabee, who was traveling with friends, "was reportedly crossing the road to take a picture of an eagle when the accident occurred," the release said.
Park rangers advise visitors to use pullouts to stop and view wildlife, and note that it is unsafe to park on the shoulders of roads and walk in and along the roadway.
"Also, drivers should slow down when moving through a congested area," the release said.
Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call Yellowstone National Park at 307-344-2132.
